The moment we read about Katipunan Art Festival promotions, we couldn’t contain our excitement. Finally! The local art scene… in our second home, Katipunan! Art fairs, pop-up stores, exhibits, workshops, live demos, film screening, live music, and open mic night! It was definitely a weekend of art at the first Katipunan Art Festival held yesterday around Esteban Abada and the stretch of Katipunan Avenue.
First agenda: registration and acquisition of festival maps at the Hey Kessy store in Esteban Abada. The weather was cooperating. It was a hot mid-summer afternoon, an almost perfect festival weather, but exploring the stretch of Abada and Katipunan despite the heat was all worth it. For art!
Adorned with intricate papercut pieces and bombed with colorful washis, the Hey Kessy store featured papercut works in their All One Piece Papercut Exhibit. Later in the evening, they also held a French film screening sponsored by Alliance Française de Manille.
There were so many things happening all at once and I, as the festival representative of the Sundae Scoops team, couldn’t decide where to go first. Look at this jampacked schedule: ART! EVERYWHERE!!!
After my mini trip to Hey Kessy, Ninyo Fusion Cuisine was the nearest stop so I decided to spend my afternoon there. Live demos were held for the entire afternoon which included the talents of PH Association of Printmakers (rubbercutting), Wiji Lacsamana (painting nature), Alessa Lanot (botanical doodles), Pergy Acuna/Maggie Adan/Lai Reyes (papercutting), Mary Imbong (paperquilling), Adrian Alfonso (graffiti), Mia Casal (pottery), Abbey Sy (lettering), Tippy Go of Googly Gooeys (abstract watercolor), June Digan (watercolor), and Jelvin Base/Carl Chua/John Ed De Vera/Rico Sta. Cruz (typography). The crowd was overwhelming and I considered myself lucky enough to have witnessed these amazing talents during their demos and listen to their work processes and techniques.
The demos and talks where very educational and inspiring. Listening to these talents made me want to get back to that desk immediately and practice, practice, practice!
