Graphika Manila 2016: Blind / Matthew Encina

If you think we’ve had enough of the Graphika Manila talks, think again. We’re still on a high from all the inspiring things every speaker shared! Different stories, different ways of creating — but one thing made us gather here: passion.

Before he started pitching those crazy awesome ideas, Matthew Encina told us about his love for video games and how he spent thousands of hours playing them. Who’d have known that something our moms kept telling us back in the days were unproductive-activities-go-stretch-your-muscles-play-outside turned out to be a good thing after all?

Blind is a multi-disciplinary design studio based in Santa Monica, California. They have produced award-winning videos that combine design, animation, live action and visual effects. For over 19 years, Blind has worked with Fortune 500 companies to start-ups including Microsoft, Xbox, Nike, Sony Playstation, Mitsubishi Motors, Audi UK, Electronic Arts and artists such as Justin Timberlake and Coldplay. Blind is represented by creative director, Matthew Encina.

Few of Blind’s creations include this interactive music video for Coldplay’s song, Ink.

Behind the scenes. (Coldplay fans, unite!)

No doubt this got nominated in the Emmy awards.

This one was made for Xbox “Jump Ahead” E3.

Due to the success of the Jump Ahead film for E3, Microsoft and Ayzenberg gathered the team again for another hit that highlight Xbox’s holiday lineup, incorporate gameplay footage, and at the same time develop an imagery similar to that of the previous film, Jump Ahead. Thus, the “Greatest Games” film was born.

Awesome combination of design, animation, and a good choice of haunting music. As a video gamer myself, the track and the sound effects are both equally important as the graphics. (This is even more effective for those survival horror games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil — which I don’t normally play if I want to sleep peacefully during the night. Even without seeing the visuals, the music just keeps playing in my mind over and over again. HAHAHA.)

Matthew gave us three simple things to always remember.

In his talk, he also emphasized the idea of persistence. Never ever give up. If you know it’s a good idea, even if it’s crazy, never let it go. Their team never stopped pitching their ideas until they get the project they want. Embrace your passions. Don’t stop expanding your knowledge base: read books, attend events, go to talks, and apply what you learn in your work without forgetting to always be yourself.

Visit the Blind website, Twitter, and Facebook for more of their works. You can also find Matthew Encina on the following channels: websiteTwitter, Instagram, Vimeo.
